Charlotte Names Anthony Fox Interim City Attorney: Bridging Transition with Expertise
Anthony Fox has been appointed as Charlotte’s interim city attorney following an 8-3 vote by the City Council on Monday. The appointment marks the beginning of a six-month term as the city moves forward with a search for a permanent replacement for outgoing attorney Colin Brown. Fox’s appointment takes effect January 1.
Mayor Lyles and Council on the Appointment
During the meeting, Mayor Vi Lyles introduced the discussion with an emphasis on ensuring continuity. "We have reached a discussion around this," she stated. "The new city attorney will serve for six months as we continue our search for a permanent candidate." Councilmember Braxton Winston motioned to nominate Fox, seconded by Councilmember Renee Johnson.
Discussion was brief, with council members emphasizing the importance of maintaining legal stability during this interim period. Despite three dissenting votes, the majority expressed confidence in Fox’s ability to manage the role effectively.
Who is Anthony Fox?
Fox steps into the role with a wealth of legal expertise. Known for his sharp judgment and ability to navigate complex municipal legal landscapes, his interim leadership will be instrumental in handling the city’s ongoing litigation and advising on legal matters that align with Charlotte’s long-term goals.
While council members refrained from detailing his credentials during the meeting, his track record suggests a steady hand at the wheel during this critical transitional phase.
Acknowledging the Past, Building for the Future
As the meeting closed, Colin Brown’s legacy as city attorney was acknowledged with humor and warmth. Councilmember Tariq Bokhari joked, "I think you’re doing a great job in retirement already," drawing smiles and laughter from the chamber. Mayor Lyles concluded the discussion by reiterating the importance of Fox’s tenure: "This is not just about transition but about ensuring the city continues to serve its residents effectively."
What’s Ahead for Charlotte?
The search for a permanent city attorney is already underway, with the council pledging transparency and diligence in finding the right candidate. Updates on the timeline and process are expected in the coming months. In the meantime, Fox’s leadership will help the city manage its legal priorities with stability and professionalism.
